The relationship between physical form and spiritual function, in particular, seems to constitute the basis of several classification systems for Lobi statuary. This work aims to give an overview and comparative analysis of the existing classification systems and identify constants and discrepancies, which may constitute starting points for future research. The study is limited to anthropomorphic wooden sculpture and based on a detailed literature review. Literature is also analyzed from a scientific point of view, i.e. the methods of investigation and the reliability of information are taken into account. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the adequacy of the corresponding classification systems and the general integration of Lobi iconography into that of African art.
